APRIL’s sustainability strategy has been driven by its Sustainable Forest Management Policy 2.0 (SFMP 2.0) since 2015. The SFMP 2.0 oversees their entire operational strategy from supply chain management to conservation efforts. 45 performance indicators have been developed to ensure ARPIL’s progress in implementing its commitments under the SFMP 2.0. Regular engagement with local operational areas and suppliers were also conducted to ensure they stay committed to their sustainability practices. APRIL’s conservation to plantation ratio has constantly exceed the legal requirement and their industry’s standards, and the company is currently 83% of the way towards achieving their goal to conserve one hectare of forest for every hectare of plantation. The SFMP 2.0 is overseen by a Stakeholder Advisory Committee, which regularly reviews and audits the implementation of APRIL’s sustainability commitments under the SFMP 2.0. As part of APRIL’s commitment to engage the younger generation in their sustainability strategy, APRIL has also developed a Sustainability Professional Development Program (SPDP) which employs fresh graduates whose interests lie in sustainability.

Community

Mondelēz Indonesia

Mondelez is one of the forerunners when it comes to creating sustainable impact in communities. In 2013, they developed the Cocoa Life programme to help cocoa farmers maintain their livelihoods while ensuring a sustainable supply of cocoa. This global programme aims to reach 40,000 farmers and have an impact on 400 community members by 2022. To date, its impact spans across four regions with a total of over 37,000 farmers across 296 communities. The outcome of the programme was then assessed by an external party through a Farmer Impact Study and a Community Impact Study.

Supply Chain Management

Apical Group Ltd

Apical Group Ltd. has put in place policies and guidelines such as the Manual for Responsible Sourcing, to build a traceable and transparent palm oil supply chain, from the level of refineries to the smallholder. The company is also playing a part in shaping the palm oil industry, through the co-development of the Sustainability Assurance and Innovation Alliance (SUSTAIN) which brings together relevant stakeholders in the palm oil industry to initiate a blockchain solution for improving traceability to and from production areas. Through such solutions, SUSTAIN can help accelerate the push towards No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation (NDPE) compliance.

PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk

Unilever’s Code of Business Principles and Code of Policies outline and define the company’s ethics, values, compliance with measures to counter corruption. This anti-corruption policy is communicated to all employees, suppliers and contractors. The company also has a Whistleblowing policy to report instances of non-compliance with all reports being investigated and resolved.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

APRIL Group

In 2019, APRIL prioritized seven of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, following the completion of an in-depth analysis of its current social and economic contribution to the Riau Province, as supported by its engagements with a broad group of stakeholders, including community representatives. The analysis was jointly undertaken by APRIL and sustainability consultants from PwC. The goals have been divided into two groups: (1) Core Goals, which have the strongest alignment with the company’s operations and sustainability commitments; and (2) Catalytic Goals, which enable APRIL to have an exponential impact on the surrounding communities.

Workforce

PT Titra Investama Danone AQUA

Danone AQUA’s 2020 roadmap enforces three main goals for their workforce – inclusivity, gender equality and culture and country. The Danone People Survey is also conducted biennially to ensure the well-being of their employees, and covers a range of topics. Various channels have been put in place for their employees’ voices to be heard. The company has a policy for maternity and paternity leave that goes beyond the government regulations.

Energy Management

PT Astra International Tbk

Astra displayed strong sustainability practices in their energy management and in their nature conservation efforts. Since 2016, Astra has developed its Astra Green Energy (AGEn) project, which is based on the ISO 50000 series of energy management systems. The company’s total energy consumption has decreased over the past three years, as confirmed by the monitoring data that has been provided for each year. The reduction in energy consumption intensity per product for 2017–2018 was 4.23%. To promote innovation in energy practices, the company’s subsidiaries are also encouraged to enter a competition held at the annual Astra Green Energy Awards and Summit.

Waste and Material Productivity

PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk

When it comes to managing their hazardous and non-hazardous waste, Unilever uses a full life cycle approach and reports their process and data transparently in its Sustainability Report. Unilever Indonesia has a target for its waste and packaging segments, which involves halving the waste that is associated with the disposal of its products by 2020 (from a 2010 baseline). In 2015, the waste impact had been reduced by 29% (since 2010). The company’s waste data has been assured by ISAE 3000.

Land use, Biodiversity and Environment

PT Agincourt Resources

Agincourt Resources has committed to site rehabilitation and restoration of forest ecosystems. In 2018, 4.6 hectares of disturbed area was rehabilitated, with a total of 3,640 seedlings planted. The management of impacts on biodiversity is addressed by the PTAR Code of for Practice Biodiversity Management, which is reviewed each year.

APRIL Group

The implementation of Sustainable Forest Management Policy 2.0 (SFMP 2.0) is overseen by a Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC), which regularly reviews and independently audits the implementation of APRIL’s sustainability commitments under SFMP 2.0. Since 2018, the SAC had made 153 recommendations, with 70 of the recommendations implemented. APRIL has identified its internal and external stakeholders, and the channels through which the stakeholders are engaged – this is all summarized via the infographic that has been included in their Sustainability Report.

Bank Negara Indonesia

Bank Negara Indonesia has developed an initiative which aims to reduce waste by placing monetary value on waste. The “Let’s Save with Waste” programme established in 2018 nurtures a cashless society through the utilization of a mobile banking facility where residents would bring their trash to the Waste Bank for it to be weighed and converted into a rupiah value. The sum is then deposited into the residents’ accounts using the BNI Pandai and CNI Simpanan Pelajar products. This programme has garnered the participation of over 250 schools, 150 waster banks and 159,622 residents. The Bank also aims to expand it to Bandung, West Java.

Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara

Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) is an organization that has a mission to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends. YKAN and TNC operates in 15 provinces in Indonesia through three major programs covering land and sea. One of their initiative: Aksi Inspiratif Warga Untuk Perubahan (SIGAP), is an approach to community empowerment developed by TNC. As the name implies, this approach encourages villagers to empower themselves and take inspirational actions towards creating extraordinary lives in the midst of sustainable natural resources.

PT Titra Investama Danone AQUA

Aqua Indonesia has implemented various policies to achieve the company’s overall sustainability agenda. Aqua Indonesia has employed the Danone Group’s Sustainability Strategy Vision, which consists of the three pillars – Water, Carbon, and Packaging. The company’s sustainability efforts are actively managed and overseen at a high level, by the company’s Director and VPs. They have set clear and ambitious targets to achieve positive water balance and 100% recyclable packaging by 2030 and net zero carbon footprint by 2050. In addition, the company is one of the founders of PRAISE (Packaging and Recycling Alliance for Indonesia’s Sustainable Environment) and has been actively involved in this programme since its inception in 2010.

Multi Bintang Indonesia Tbk PT

Multi Bintang respects individual and cultural diversity, promoting inclusiveness in the workplace. The company has a non-discriminatory policy when it comes to their employment practices to promote diversity within the company. Evaluation and employee engagement is also conducted biannually to address any concerns so as to ensure a dynamic and productive workplace. The company has introduced minimum training hours for employees, where several modules are provided for learning.

PT East West Seed Indonesia

East West Seed Indonesia champions the Bina Tani Sejahtera Foundation (YBTS), which was founded in 2009, with the aim of assisting farmers in improving their livelihoods. In 2018, the Foundation trained and provided support for more than 12,000 farmers in five districts in Indonesia. The programme involves a tactical approach, using on-farm improvements, off-farm values and linkages, nutritional values, while creating synergies. One of the strategic initiatives of the Foundation involves the development of the SPINDO app aimed at allowing smallholders to have better access to industry-relevant information.

APP Sinarmas

APP Sinar Mas has clear energy management policies which are embedded within its Environmental Stewardship Policy. Launched in 2012, the Vision 2020 scheme sets clear goals of achieving a 10% reduction in energy intensity by 2020 and 25% reduction by 2030. Currently, APP Sinar Mas has managed to reduce their energy intensity by 9%. Strict monitoring has also taken place, and data has shown that energy consumption has decreased over the past five years.

L’Oreal Indonesia

L’Oréal has committed to a 60% reduction in water consumption per finished product by 2020, from a 2005 baseline. To achieve this, the Group is channelling its efforts into a multipronged approach involving respectful use of the resource – minimised to a needs-only basis – and development of water reuse and recycling projects on L’Oréal sites. In 2018, L’Oréal Group was awarded a triple ‘A’ CDP ranking, the highest score possible, on the three key topics of climate protection, managing water sustainably and preventing deforestation. The Group is the only company to have obtained the triple ‘A’ score, three years running.

PT Titra Investama Danone AQUA

The company adheres to the Danone packaging policy to fulfil their commitments to circularity. In addition to the Zero Waste to Landfill programme which aims to send zero plastic to landfill as industrial waste by 2020. Danone-AQUA has also the #BijakBerplastik pledge in 2018 as a commitment to reduce the amount of waste produced. Through this programme, the company has targeted to collect more waste than it  produces by 2025. It has also spearheaded a nationwide campaign on the topic of recycling, which aims to reach 100 million people, including 5 million young children, by 2025, and encouarges them to use 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging by 2025.

PT Nestle Indonesia

In line with Nestle’s global Responsible Sourcing Standard, the Indonesian operations have established eight KUBs (Kelompok Usaha Bersama) for coffee suppliers to receive training, post-harvest management, improve on traceability application and receive certification. To date, a total of 20,000 coffee farmers have been certified. A similar program is available for rice suppliers as well.

PT Vale Indonesia Tbk

Vale has an anti-corruption manual that consists of a set of policies, officers, handling procedures, training sessions, internal monitoring procedures, and coverage of the various policies relating to each type of corruption. PT Vale has appointed a Compliance Officer, who reports to PT Vale’s President Director, and who is able to escalate concerns to the Board of Commissioners of PT Vale whenever necessary or appropriate. The company conducts periodic evaluations of its contracted companies in order to create a Supplier Performance Index (IDF) that records issues of quality, transparency, and continuous improvement in the relationships between the company and its suppliers.

PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk

In 2017, Unilever Indonesia mapped the 17 SDGs against its USLP. The USLP, as Unilever’s blueprint for sustainable growth, is strongly aligned with the SDGs. Each of the initiatives or strategies that is described in the Sustainability Report is linked to the SDGs, and there are no prioritized SDGs. Progress is communicated on an annual basis through the Annual/Sustainability Reports, and it is also discussed internally in the CSR/Sustainability Team.

PT Astra International Tbk

In preserving nature, Astra has developed Green Open Space (RTH) in various regions of Indonesia. This initiative involves 32,000 hectares with approximately 5 million trees. Since 2014, Astra has also started to focus on the preservation of rare fruit species. Astra works with vocational high schools all over the country to develop culture laboratories of rare fruits. Since 2014, Astra has launched an Arboretum of Rare Fruit Tree and has collected 130 species of endangered local fruit from all over the country.

Clean Power Indonesia (CPI) is the first company in Indonesia that focuses on the development of bamboo as primary energy source for remote areas. The company has three powerplants located in three villages in Mentawai, which provides electricity to 1200 families. The Project’s business model creates a synergy between the Community, State owned Utility Company (PLN) and Clean Power Indonesia (CPI).

RePal

RePal is a recycling waste company that turn platic waste into pallets for logistics. RePal uses less energy for manufacture than other pallet types and has the lowest embodied impact raw material feedstock. RePal pallets are almost waste neutral, meaning they use almost as much waste during manufacture as the waste that is produced throughout their life cycle. This includes transport and end of life (EOL) disposal.
